How do you calculate savings with JojobRT?

To ensure maximum transparency, we explain below the formulas, parameters, and official sources used to calculate environmental, economic, and mileage savings.
GENERAL PRINCIPLE: all our calculations are based on a comparison between a carpooling trip (driver plus at least one passenger) and a theoretical scenario in which each participant would have made the same journey driving their own car alone.

Mileage savings

How we measure them: the kilometers saved correspond to the trip distance certified by the passenger via GPS tracking during carpooling—that is, the kilometers they would have otherwise covered driving their own car.

Method and sources:
  • This figure is determined based on the journey’s start and end addresses entered by the passenger in the app.
  • To recognize the contribution of both participants, both the driver and the passenger are credited with 50% of the total kilometers of the journey made by the passenger.

Environmental Savings

How we calculate it: every kilometer traveled via carpooling by passengers prevents the release of an estimated amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants into the atmosphere.

Method and sources:
  • Conversion factor: 130 g of CO2 per kilometer traveled.
  • Legal basis: average emissions target for new passenger cars registered in the European Union, established by Regulation (EC) No. 443/2009.
  • Conservative choice: the value used is deliberately prudent. The actual average figure for the Italian vehicle fleet recorded by ISPRA for 2022 is 161.7 g/km. Using 130 g/km allows us to provide a conservative estimate that does not overstate the actual impact.
  • Allocation: environmental savings (in terms of CO2 and other pollutants) are calculated by multiplying the avoided kilometers by the conversion factor. Since the positive impact of the trip stems from a choice made by both the driver and the passenger, the total savings are allocated equally (50% each) between the carpool participants.

Cost savings

How we calculate it: the financial saving is based on the cost avoided by the passenger who chooses not to use their private car for that journey.

Parameters and sources:
  • Conversion factor: €0.40/km.
  • Source: ACI (Automobile Club d’Italia) tables, based on the average value of vehicles currently on the road.
  • Update: The reference rate was updated from €0.20/km to €0.40/km on June 3, 2026.
  • Allocation: the financial saving is calculated by multiplying the kilometers avoided by the passenger by the conversion factor.
